Rocking family camping with music festivals
So you’ve done the traditional family camping thing: slept out under the stars with the hum of insects lulling everyone to sleep. It’s all great fun, but now the kids are getting older, and they’re ready for something way cool. Well, how about an outdoor music festival to make them say, “OMG!”
Summer is the season for these family-friendly outdoor camping events. Yes, they can really be family-friendly. They’re not all drunk-fest mosh pits. In truth, many of the organizers have kids, teens and adults in mind when they plan these events.
Take the California WorldFest. It’s coming up in a couple weeks in northern California. The blues and folk festival not only features the usual multi-stage music performances you’ll find at any of these camping concerts, but parents can also sign kids and teenagers up for music and art workshops. And for the kids who just want to get wild and crazy, there’s also a play area for games.
So maybe blues and folk aren’t the kinds of music you want to listen to for three days. Or maybe California is too far for you to travel. Don’t give up on the idea. Music festivals featuring different genres are going on this year across the world and the US until the weather just won’t allow them anymore. About.com has a great list of festivals in just about every US state.
When you’re planning your trip, read the camping rules carefully. Some may require you to bring chairs that sit low to the ground if you want front-row seats at the concerts. Others may not allow campers to build campfires, but they may OK above-ground fire pits. Most of these festivals have comprehensive sites that give first-time campers the information they need to have a rocking time. If they don’t, pick up the phone and ask.
So get planning today. Gather your family around the computer and pick a music festival that will bring happy camping to everyone.
