When I found out the story Michael and I were going to tell was the reunion of a firefighter and the toddler he saved 15 year ago, I knew I wouldn't shoot the package's best video. Someone else had already shot it more than a decade back when a crew of first responders pulled the boy from the ground. This was a welcome challenge to see what I could do to make a story filled with file video seem new and fresh.
We had little video available for this story, just a couple interviews and a some old photos. Still, Michael and I were able to tell a compelling story about a potential danger few people in the community think about: repeat DUI offenders.
This is a fun example of a photographic risk I took with the reporter. It required a delicate approach, both in the shooting and writing, to tell the story about an artist who drew rear ends for a living. The result was a good-humored piece that didn't offend.
